history

Historical picture of the railway line at Guaira

The Estrada de Ferro Paraná Oeste SA (FERROESTE) is a railway line that connects different places around the state of Paraná . In the 19th century a connection was planned from the coast around Paranaguá with the state capital Curitiba and the place Foz do Iguaçu in the hinterland on the border to Paraguay and Argentina (located at the waterfalls of the same name).

On December 10, 1996, the company was sold by auction to Ferrovia Paraná SA (Ferropar), which received a 30-year concession and provided guarantees for the expansion of the line. However, the government of the state of Paraná took control of the company in 2006 because the promised benefits were not met. Since then the name has been changed to FERROESTE. Today the railway line connects the cities of Guarapuava and Cascavel . The main cargo consists of agricultural products such as soy , corn and grain . But also industrial products such as cement , fertilizer and frozen goods are driven with FERROESTE.

Future projects

The section from Cascavel (Paraná) to Guaíra and on to Dourados in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul is currently being built and will gradually be completed by 2015.

FERROESTE is studying a project to construct a siding between Cascavel and Foz do Iguaçu with a total length of 143 km, which would cover a railway corridor between the ports of Paranaguá (on the Atlantic) and Antofagasta , in Chile (on the Pacific).
