Fester is a Norwegian extreme metal band from Askim , which was founded in 1989 under the name Heroic Conduct , disbanded in 1995 and has been active again since 2010.

history

The band was formed in 1989. The group was originally called Heroic Conduct , but the name was changed after the band contacted Anders Odden of Cadaver and suggested the name Fester. Odden also designed the first band logo. After the first two demos had been released with The Introduction (1991) and Winter of Sin (1992), the group signed a contract with No Fashion Records in 1992 , which released the debut album Winter of Sin . The second album Silence was released via Lethal Records in 1994 , before the group split up in 1995. A reunion was planned for 2000, which is why No Fashion Records re-released Silence . The reunification could not take place, however, because the bass player at the time died. The actual re-establishment happened in 2010. In 2012 the next album was released under the name A Celebration of Death on CD on Abyss Records , as a record on Floga Records and as an audio cassette on Total Holocaust Records .

style

According to Garry Sharpe-Young in his book AZ of Death Metal , the group combine Silence Doom , Death and Black Metal , with the vocals being mainly whispered. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer stated in his review of Silence that parallels to Black Metal, especially in the vocals and guitar sound, can be heard. Compared to compatriots from groups like Enslaved , Immortal , Emperor or Mayhem , the music is less wild. The songs are more subtle and refined and comparable to the music of Katatonia and Tiamat . Bjørn Mathisen stated in an interview with Kai Wendel from Rock Hard that he first came into contact with metal through Kiss . Later he heard groups like Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Slayer and Metallica . According to Wendel, the last song on Silence , When Someone Dies , is reminiscent of Dire Straits . Mathisen differentiated himself from Black Metal and stated that he had nothing to do with Satanism .
