Festival International de la Mode en Afrique

The Festival International de la Mode en Afrique (also: Festival International de la Mode Africaine , FIMA for short ) is a fashion festival that has so far taken place in different locations in Niger and Western Sahara / Morocco . It specializes in fashion from Africa and the African diaspora .

The festival was founded in 1998 by the Nigerien fashion designer Alphadi . The first event took place in the Sahara desert . 1500 invited guests took part in the three-day event, including well-known fashion designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and Yves Saint Laurent . Criticism of the UNESCO- supported festival came from Islamic organizations , among others .
