The fire-scaly sapling ( Hygrocybe intermedia ) is a type of mushroom from the family of snail relatives . Because of its dry surface, it is also known as the dry sapling .
features
The fire-scaly sapling is a very strong species. The hat reaches a diameter of 2 to 6 cm and is convex to butt-humped. It is bright scarlet to orange in color, but later becomes orange-yellow. The surface is dry and has radial fibers. Towards the middle it is very fine-scaly. The lamellae are whitish to yellowish in color. Their edges are often sawn. The stout, cylindrical stem is 2 to 8 cm long and 0.5 to 1.3 cm thick. It is tinged with red on a yellow or orange background. Its surface is dry and grainy along its length. The base is tinted white. The flesh is yellowish. The smell and taste are insignificant.
The spores measure 8 to 11 by 4 to 5 µm. They are very variable in shape. The spectrum ranges from ellipsoidal or egg-shaped to sub-cylindrical, pear-shaped or almost bean-shaped. The basidia have four or two pores. They rarely have one or three spores.
Species delimitation
The species is similar to almost all orange-colored saplings. Above all, it looks very similar to the garnet-red sapling ( H. punicea ). This one has a sticky handle. The Schnürsporige Saftling ( H. quieta ) can also be colored similarly. However, its hat is smooth and bare, the lamellae are orange to salmon-colored and the stem is more yellow-tinged.
Ecology and phenology
The fire-scaly sap can be found in heather moors, on forest meadows, semi-arid lawns, unfertilized mountain meadows and pastures. It colonizes fresh to moist, acidic to weakly alkaline soils, which are particularly poor in nutrients. The parent rock is of different types.
The fruiting bodies usually appear in groups from late July to late October.
distribution
The fire-scaly sapling is distributed submeridional to temperate . It can be found in North Asia (Eastern Siberia) and Europe. The find areas are, however, widely scattered. The fungus is very rare in the lowlands, but is scattered in the mountains. In Europe, the area extends from Ireland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and France in the west to Poland and Austria in the east and south to Spain, Italy and Romania and north to the Hebrides , Denmark, the south of Scandinavia and the Baltic states .
meaning
The fire-scaly sap is edible, but is hardly considered for food purposes. Due to its rarity, it should be spared.
