Filial church hl. Ubald in Schlierbach

The subsidiary church of Heiliger Ubald is located in the Sautern district of the Upper Austrian municipality of Schlierbach . The Roman Catholic branch church is dedicated to St. Ubald von Gubbio . The first documentary mention was made in 1443, the current church was built from 1959. The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A "Capella Sti. Ubalid ”was mentioned as early as 1443 in the Schlierbach district of Sautern. The chapel was equipped with a main altar and two side altars. At the time of the Reformation there are also evangelical services. Since 1620 the pastoral care of the place of worship has been provided by Schlierbach Abbey . Around 1650 the chapel was thoroughly renovated.

Under the Schlierbach abbot Christian Stadler, the chapel was torn down and a completely new church was built between 1717 and 1720. The inauguration - again to Saint Ubald von Gubbio - was carried out by Passau Prince-Bishop Joseph Dominikus von Lamberg on September 28, 1726. Johann Karl von Reslfeld was responsible for the fresco on the vault of the church ; the motif was the glorification of the deeds of Saint Urbald. The side altars date from 1725, in 1739 the St. Florian altar created by the sculptor Markus Riedler was erected. The organ was dated to the year 1751. The church furnishings also included a Gothic figure of the church saint (created around 1420) and a late Gothic Ubald figure (second half of the 17th century).

The church suffered from a serious structural defect from the beginning, the foundation was too small. The choir vault was pushed horizontally, so from 1749 two large supporting pillars on the northwest corner reinforced the building. In addition, a number of buckles had to be used to accommodate the vault slide. The renewal of the roof structure is documented in 1838. The bell tower had three new bells from 1905, two of which had to be returned in the First World War .

On October 25, 1924, a fire broke out in an estate just five meters from the church, which spread to the sacred building and destroyed it down to the masonry. With the collapse of the vault, most of the Reslfeld fresco was also lost. The work of art had depicted scenes from the life of Saint Ubald, in which he conjured lightning and thunderstorms against his enemies. Despite the inferno, the high altar and the organ remained practically undamaged. In 1925 a church building association was founded - it rebuilt the church and repaired the interior.

The church had a single-nave , two-bay nave and a recessed, rectangular choir with a straight end, the roof turret in the west had a pointed helmet .

In 1958, the western wall was in acute danger of collapsing. After an on-site inspection it was determined that the estimated renovation costs would be disproportionate to the use of the building. The Kirchdorf district administration issued the cancellation notice on May 17, 1958. The fresco that had been preserved in the choir vault was removed and temporarily stored in the monastery, the motif used was Bishop Ubald, how he heals a blind man. The altar lights and a statue of the Good Shepherd have also come into the monastery. The eleven meter high altar with another image of the saint was placed in the parish church of St. Elisabeth in Altenberg near Linz .

The demolition of the old church also marked the end of a long tradition. The St. Mark's procession and the supplication processions in May were also discontinued, as were the processions from other places that had the Ubaldkirche as their destination. The “Florianimarkt”, which is responsible for the fire brigade and music every year on May 4th, relocated its location in 1969 from the area around the church to the community square in Schlierbach.

Today's church

In July 1959, construction of the new church began. Today's sacred building has smaller dimensions than its predecessor. A section from the Reslfeld fresco was applied to the wall behind the altar, and the old statue of the Virgin could also be put up again. The consecration of the church was led by Abbot Berthold Niedermoser on May 4, 1961. A 70 kg "Floriani bell" has been in service since 1996.

The subsidiary church of Heiliger Ubald is part of the Schlierbach parish, which in turn is incorporated into Schlierbach Abbey .
