The St. Michael branch church is located in the southern part of Feldkirchen in Carinthia . St. Michael was first mentioned in a document in 1387. In 1537 the church fell victim to a fire.

Building description

The church is a Gothic building from the 14th century, which underwent changes in the Baroque and early 19th century. The nave is supported by three -tiered buttresses , the retracted choir by two-tiered buttresses . The tower on the northeast side of the nave with wall slits, arched sound windows and a baroque onion helmet was raised in 1833. Hieronymus Egker cast a bell in 1540. The sacristy stands in the corner between the tower and the choir . The architectural polychromy of the Biedermeier period was restored in 1994. The tower and the nave have plaster decorations. A round window and a mural of St. Michael from the 18th century are located above the west portal . A Roman epitaph for Aurelius Sura, his wife Aurelia Tricconia and his son Aurelius Ursus is walled in at the end of the choir.

In the two-bay nave, a barrel vault with stitch caps and straps rests over wall pillars. The wooden gallery is plastered. The small gallery organ was repaired in 1995 and the inlaid organ case marked “1745” was restored. The former late Gothic triumphal arch was changed in the Baroque and today consists of a belt over the Tuscan order in the reveal . In the choir, which is one step higher, a deeply drawn-down ribbed vault from the end of the 14th century rests on wall supports. The choir windows were baroque or walled up. A straight lintel portal on the north wall of the choir leads into the groin-vaulted sacristy.

Facility

All three neo-baroque altars date from the 19th century. The high altar hides a statue of St. Michael in the central niche, and that of Maria Immaculata in the top niche . Chandelier angels or adoring angels stand to the side. The left side altar shows a crucifixion group in front of a painted Jerusalem. In the top picture is God the Father shown. The angel figures on the altar carry instruments of suffering . The altar panel of the right side altar from the second half of the 18th century depicts the walk of the Holy Family across the mountains. The figures of Saints Catherine and Barbara stand to the side . In the cafeteria there is a small Madonna picture in a rococo frame .

The former pulpit from the middle of the 18th century with paintings of the evangelists now serves as an ambo . An oval canvas image of St. Aloysius in front of the Madonna (second half of the 18th century), another canvas image of St. Aloysius with clerics from 1855, a Gothic console figure of the Archangel Michael (19th century), a console figure of a female saint and abstract stations of the cross Paintings complement the furnishings.
