Finally is the seventh compilation album by Japanese singer Namie Amuro . It was released as their last album before their retirement on September 16, 2018, represents their 25th anniversary on the stage and debuted at number 1 in the first week with 1,113,291 units sold on the Oricon charts in Japan. The compilation album is the first album in almost 14 years that sold more than a million times in the first week of sales in Japan.
Compilation details
The album has a selection of 52 songs (mostly singles), which are among their most characteristic songs based on the respective 25 years. 39 of these songs were new recordings, seven had never been released on an album before and six were new tracks. The video carriers (Blu-ray and DVD) contain twelve titles, starting with the music video Red Carpet , which was released in December 2015, to the seventh title for the last single Just You and I , which was released before this compilation, and then five more new music videos up to the twelfth title Finally , which was symbolically chosen as the last title, around the conclusion and intention of this compilation; to underscore Namie Amuro's retirement.
The first sound carrier begins with a re-recording of the debut single Mister USA , released in 1992 as a member of the Super Monkey’s group , and the last sound carrier ends with the title of the compilation of the same name, to highlight her exit from the music industry.
Digital distribution of the compilation was refused until June 16, 2019. On that day, the compilation was made available for download in full and in part. In addition to the complete publication, which includes all three CDs, the individual CDs were offered separately for download. The first CD was called Finally Vol.1 , the second Finally Vol.2 and the third Finally Vol.3 . The digital versions had an album cover, which, in contrast to the CD release, where you ca n't see a picture of Namie due to the slipcase , was shown with Namie. The cover of the full version, which was just called Finally , had a sepia effect, whereas the separate versions were colored and only differed in the color of the rose she is holding on the cover.
There was a cover for each of the three versions of the compilation, all of which were packed in a slipcase. The slipcases differ only slightly, for example a silver frame adorns the two versions with the video carriers, in which silver letters are written 25 1992–2017 Finally Namie Amuro , the white background. There is only a difference in color, because the individual 3-CD versions have a gold frame and the same-colored font. While you see the video carrier Namie Amuro posing with a close-up on the covers, you can see her sitting thoughtfully in front of a bluish rose bed as a wall on the single 3-CD version.
influence
As part of her 25th anniversary on the stage, Namie Amuro gave two open-air concerts in her hometown of Okinawa on September 16 and 17, 2017 with 25,000 visitors. These concerts were promoted with the concept Namie Amuro 25th Anniversary Live in Okinawa . She took advantage of this attention to announce her long-term retirement for September 16, 2018 on her 40th birthday on September 20, 2017. The news burst through the Japanese media landscape and Namie Amuro's music sales soared in the weeks that followed. International news agencies also reported this announcement. It was often pointed out that she had accompanied several generations and was an influential artist in Japan. This is how the international Vogue described in a headline:
"Namie Amuro," The Madonna of Japan, "Is Retiring, But Her Style Influence Lives On"
"Namie Amuro," The Madonna of Japan "is retiring, but her influential style lives on"
On the day the compilation was released, it was announced that on November 1st, one week before the release, the pre-order number broke the million mark, making her the only Japanese singer who has released at least one album in her four decades of life that is more than has sold a million times.
The album is at # 1 on the annual Billboard Japan Hot Albums of the Year charts in 2017.
Promotional activities
A documentary series entitled Documentary of Namie Amuro "Finally" has been announced for the period up to her retirement , in which one episode will be broadcast on the video portal Hulu every month until her retirement . In cooperation with Hulu, their song Do It for Love , which is a new title and was recorded exclusively for this compilation, was used as a promotional song for Hulu in Japan. Also, Namie was the lead actress in this commercial.
After Fight Together (2011) was used as the theme song for the anime series One Piece in Japan and became a popular song in Japan, another song called Hope from this compilation has now been released as the 20th theme song for the anime.
Another new song Showtime was used as the theme song for the TBS - Dorama Princess Princess .
The most characteristic song on the album Finally was chosen as the theme song for the Japanese program News Zero on the Nippon TV channel .
The episode for the series Sukkiri ( ス ッ キ リ ) for November 1, 2017 , used the new recording of Don't Wanna Cry from this compilation as the theme song.
For November 2017, Namie was chosen as MTV Artist of the Month by MTV Japan and it gave together with other music channels such as Space Shower TV and Music On! TV Namie-Amuro specials where music videos from Namie's career were shown and topics related to Namie were discussed.
Another new song How Do You Feel Now? was chosen as the theme song for the mobile operator NTT DoCoMo . The collaboration was named under the concept Namie Amuro x Docomo , as Docomo is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. In addition, Namie has worked with Docomo many times in the past, which is why a new poster from the mid-1990s by Namie for Docomo was shown on the building of Shibuya 109 from a retro perspective on a large billboard. Also How Do You Feel Now? received a music video in which Tetsuya Komuro made a guest appearance in a scene in the recording studio. Together they landed formative musical successes in the 1990s and until shortly after the turn of the millennium in Japan. In the early 2000s it was announced that she would no longer work with Tetsuya, so this guest appearance could have caused a surprise to the audience.
In 2016, Namie collaborated with 7-Eleven for the Magical Christmas campaign with her song Christmas Wish , which is now available for the first time on a sound carrier and is part of the Finally compilation . In 2017, Christmas Wish was used for a new Magical Christmas campaign, in which Namie also appeared again. After almost a year of publication, Christmas Wish got a music video for Finally .
From November 7th to November 19th, the popular 109 department store in Shibuya , Tokyo, in collaboration with Tower Records Pop Up Store, is hosting an exhibition of Namie's clothes that she used for previous covers, her Finally album photo shoot and during her concert series Namie Amuro wore 25th Anniversary Live in Okinawa . In addition, the opportunity was created to offer their entire discography for sale and to play their music continuously as background music.
