Ned Hanlan is adopted by a player named Bill, who promotes the boy on the sculling circuit for his own monetary gain. As a young man, Ned is very prone to problems, but he does not lack the determination that is required to become a great athlete. In this attempt, a businessman named Knox takes control of Hanlan's career who supports Ned for his personal gain and throws him off when that gain is no longer in sight. Ned meets his niece Margaret through Knox and falls in love with her. The two marry, but Knox realizes that his professional success is limited by the marriage.
