Fire + Ice

Fire + Ice is an English neofolk band founded in 1991 around front man Ian Read.

history

Ian Read is one of the founding figures of Neofolk, along with the band Sol Invictus, which emerged from the separation from Death in June . His interest in Odinism / Nordic mythology / paganism and magic / esotericism / occultism as well as runes , the Middle Ages and the Renaissance led u. a. to his membership in the chaos magical order Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT) and the rune guild of Edred Thorsson, the pseudonym of the American author Stephen Flowers , in which he rose to the chair of the "Rune Gild UK". These interests are reflected in his music.

Read participated in albums such as Swastikas for Noddy (1988) by Current 93 and "Brown Book" by Death in June . A little later he worked with Sol Invictus and, after his separation from this formation in 1990, founded the band Fire + Ice and his own label Fremdheit, on which almost all of the band's publications were released. The debut was released in 1992 on the New European Recordings label by Douglas Pearce (Death in June). Ian Read has been quiet for a long time since the Fire + Ice publication Birdking (2000). It wasn't until 2012 that  a completely new album followed with Fractured Man , followed in 2014 by the live album Deo Endovellico Sacrum , which takes up older pieces of music from the band's history. As a singer he could be heard on the LP Erde by Forseti , the single Dygel by Sonne Hagal and the album Wampyricon of the gothic rock project Wampyre ShadowWolf by Magus Wampyr Daoloth .

Fire & Ice album contributors include Simon Norris, Michael Cashmore , Michael Moynihan and Annabel Lee (both on Blood Axis ), Joseph Budenholzer, Joolie Wood, Matthew Butler and Freya Aswynn.

Both Ian Read and the band project have been criticized for being on the far right of the Neofolk scene.

Read described his objective in Codex 5 (May 1994, p. 18): “I am interested in building a spider web-like network of higher-ranking people across the planet, people who may not know each other but who are aware of the web and are empowered to bring about change. These changes may not always be for the better, but they could make an interesting world. "

In an interview with Fanzine Sigill (subtitle: magazine for the conservative cultural avant-garde in Europe) (No. 8) Read stated when he was asked about “ fascist and racist ideas”: “No idea is completely worthless. The Germans had a huge complex that, frankly, had been inoculated into them by post-war brainwashing. [...] German magicians should really get rid of the opinions about what is 'correct' and what is not [...] that people have forced upon them. I offer you the following as food for thought: Concentration camps should probably be abbreviated to KL, but concentration camps were introduced because the Z made it sound much more terrible ... "
