Live and act
Kjoneman's surname comes from the Prussian family name Könemann, his father was Friedrich Napoleon Könemann from Moscow (1838-1903).
Kjoneman studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Nikolai Swerew (piano), Vasily Safonow (conducting), Anton Arensky and Sergei Taneyev (composition) and Mikhail Ippolitow-Ivanov (music theory). He graduated in 1897 with two gold medals (in the subjects of piano and music theory). He worked in Astrakhan for some time . From 1899 to 1901 he was the conductor of the Russian Choral Society in Moscow. For the grand opening of the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on April 7, 1901, Kjoneman wrote the cantata hymn, which became the official hymn of the Moscow Conservatory. He was a professor at the Moscow Conservatory from 1912 to 1932.
He worked for 24 years as a companion and arranger with Fyodor Chaliapin , who was about the same age and whom he first met in 1896. The Song of the Volga Tugs ( Russian Эй, ухнем! ) Arranged by Kjoneman became particularly famous abroad after Chaliapin's exile. Chaliapin performed some of the romances he wrote. Kjoneman toured Russia extensively as a pianist. Among other things, he made various recordings for De Luxe.
In his secular choral works he set texts by S. Nadson , AK Tolstoi , M. Lermontow , A. Maikow , N. Manykin-Newstrujew , A. Puschkin and Heinrich Heine (in the translation by P. Weinberg ) to music . They were recently included in the anthology of Russian secular a cappella choral music from the 19th to the early 20th centuries (Volume 12).
Kjoneman died in his birthplace and is buried in the Pyatnitskoye Cemetery in Moscow .
