The Ute Bock refugee project is a non-profit , not-for-profit association for refugee aid in Vienna . The work focus is on counseling and support for mostly homeless asylum seekers living in Vienna and other refugees in need .

history

Project founder Ute Bock (2011)

The refugee project was founded on May 21, 2002 by the social worker Ute Bock as the Ute Bock Verein - housing and integration project to support refugees. Two years earlier, Ute Bock had retired as a social worker and from that point on, had been volunteering to take care of the aid project she initiated for refugees and asylum seekers.

The self-image of the association is based on four principles: It is religiously and politically independent, wants to strengthen the rights and skills of refugees ( empowerment ), stands up for the fight against all forms of racism and discrimination and offers its clients low-threshold access to aid. Soon, various initiatives arose around the association to raise donations. In 2003 there was the “Bock auf Bier” campaign in 70 Viennese restaurants (repeated in 2007 as “Bock auf Bier reloaded”), in which a surcharge of 10 cents on the beer price was earmarked for the association. Also in 2003, the series of events "Bock auf Kultur", which has been repeated annually since then, took place for the first time with numerous benefit concerts and readings and other activities by well-known cultural workers. In Upper Austria, the social forum Freiwerk organized the charity cultural festival "Bock Ma's" for several years, in Vienna the fans of the Wiener Sportclub organize the soccer tournament "Ute-Bock-Cup" every year.

Supported by a network of mostly voluntary helpers, Bock now organized private shared apartments and family apartments, which she financed and looked after with the help of donations and out of her own pocket. In her housing project she soon provided around 100 apartments for over 300 people from more than 20 countries who would otherwise be homeless without government support. The concept also includes "giving the residents the feeling of being able to live in their own four walls again after an often long period of flight and accommodation in refugee camps and homes". Another 1,000 homeless asylum seekers have their delivery address as part of a post and registration service, a requirement for correspondence with authorities, at the Ute Bock association. In addition, the association helps organize legal advice for the refugees , also in cooperation with NGOs , operates a free clothing store and arranges various courses (German, literacy , information skills , etc.) as part of an educational program .

In 2005 the association got its own office for the first time , supported by the Vienna Social Fund of the City of Vienna . With the support of several companies ( bene , GEA and others) that made donations in kind as sponsors, an advisory center was set up in the Große Sperlgasse in Vienna's 2nd district at the beginning of 2006 . In 2008, Bock's association was on the verge of financial failure, but was given substantial support by the entrepreneur Hans Peter Haselsteiner . Haselsteiner bought the building of the former journeyman's home in Zohmanngasse in Vienna's 10th district from the City of Vienna through his Concordia private foundation in 2011 and financed the renovation and conversion to make it available to Bock's association as a dormitory. In May 2012 the association moved into the new "Ute Bock House" with living space for around 70 refugees and space for counseling facilities, where Bock last lived in a small apartment. It serves as an office building for the association's employees.

The end of 2012 announced the real estate entrepreneur Hansjörg Ulreich on the existing since 2005 collaboration with Bock because of him through Prekariumsvertrag apartments made available were rented by the club indefinitely to the there-housed. The Vienna Social Fund presented due to the courier -Article about short term rent subsidies to the housing project, but continued after a review of the facts to work with the club away again, because there is no misuse of funds existed.

In 2014, the founder Bock stepped down due to health reasons, which is why the association has been struggling with a decline in donations since then. Bock died in Vienna on January 19, 2018.

Structure and employees

The board of the association consists of five members, was headed by Ute Bock and exercises its function on a voluntary basis. In 2016, a total of 20 full-time professionals, 6 community service providers, 30 volunteer trainers and over 80 volunteer workers were involved in the refugee project. The association is mainly financed by private donations, sponsors and prize money. He receives funding from the Federal Ministry of the Interior (community service ) and the Vienna Social Fund (advice center).

activity

In 2015 around 250 people from 39 countries lived in 60 external apartments and 70 single rooms in the Ute Bock House in Vienna's 10th district, and 700 people were registered with the association's postal and registration service. In addition to this residential project, the association offers various training and advisory services. He also organizes the placement of German courses and other training.
