The flat-headed red- toothed shrew ( Sorex roboratus ) is a species of shrew from the genus of the red- toothed shrew ( Sorex ). It occurs in parts of Russia , Mongolia and the People's Republic of China .

features

With a head-trunk length of 5.8 to 8.7 centimeters, the flat-headed red-toothed shrew is one of the medium-sized to large shrew species. The tail reaches a length of 31 to 43 millimeters - and is thus shorter than the rest of the body - the rear foot from 12 to 15 millimeters. The back fur is very dark brown, the sides are lighter and the belly is sand-colored gray. The tail is sharply separated into a dark upper side and a light underside.

Tooth formula of the Sorex species

The skull has a total length of 20 to 22 millimeters. As most species of the genus has the type in the maxilla per half an incisor (incisor) and then five unicuspid teeth, a Vorbackenzahn (premolar) and three molars (molar). In the lower jaw, however, it has a single canine behind the incisor. Overall, the animals have a set of 32 teeth. The tooth roots are colored red as in most red-toothed shrews.

The genome of the flat-headed red-toothed shrew consists of a diploid chromosome set of 2n = 42 (FN = 70).

distribution

Distribution area (red-brown) of the flat-headed red-toothed shrew

The flat-headed red-toothed shrew occurs in the boreal coniferous forest and forest tundra in northern Asia from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean . The species is native to parts of Russia , Mongolia and the People's Republic of China . In Mongolia the species lives along the basin of the Onon in the Chentii Mountains , on the Chöwsgöl Nuur and on the Chalcha in the Great Hinggan Mountains . In China, the species occurs only in the north of the province of Xinjiang in the Altai .

Way of life

As is the case with many species of the genus, only little data is available on the way of life of this species. Sorex roboratus lives in the boreal coniferous forest and the forest tundra and is accordingly adapted to cold climates. Like all shrews, this species also feeds on invertebrates, mainly earthworms in the north and insects in the southern part of the range. The breeding season is in the summer and the animals can have three litters each year with seven to eight young.

Systematics

'The flat-headed red-toothed shrew is classified as an independent species within the genus of the red- toothed shrew ( Sorex ), which consists of around 80 species. The first scientific description comes from Hollister from 1913, who described an individual from the region around Gorno-Altaisk in the Russian Altai . The species was known in part as Sorex vir G. Allen, 1914, however the older description was given priority by Hollister and S. vir was considered a synonym . Within the genus, the species is classified in the subgenus Sorex and assigned to the S. caecutiens group.

Apart from the nominate form Sorex roboratus roboratus, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Threat and protection

The flat-headed red-toothed shrew is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as not endangered (least concern) due to its large distribution area and the non-existent population threat. In some regions deforestation and fire pose a threat to habitats , in other regions drainage and droughts are a potential threat.
