The flag of Manchukuo was the national flag of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo between 1932 and 1945 .

The flag is similar to the 5-stripe first flag of the Republic of China from 1912, in which the individual colors stood for the peoples of China :

The color of the Manchu was yellow , which is emphasized by the yellow background of the flag, although in Manchukuo the actual Manchurians represented a small minority.

The color yellow was also a color of the Manchurian last dynasty of the Empire of China , the Qing Dynasty (清朝), whose last ruler Puyi was also Emperor Manchukuos between 1934 and 1945.

According to Puyi's memoirs, however, the five colors in Manchukuo's case no longer stood for the five peoples of Han, Mongols, Hui and Tibetans, but for the five "state peoples" of Manchukuos defined by the constitution: Manchu, Mongols, Chinese (Han), Koreans and Japanese (Japan had secured settlement rights for colonists).
