background

The band's second studio album, Open Up and Say ... Ahh! had given the group a number one hit in the US with Every Rose Has Its Thorn, among other things, the album itself had climbed to number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified five times platinum . In Europe Poison had slightly less success: The group reached the charts here too, but could not reach the top ten with either the album or the singles .

Flesh & Blood was in the Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver ( Canada included) and Bruce Fairbairn produced . The release took place on June 21, 1990, as singles , the tracks Unskinny Bop and Something to Believe In were decoupled. With Flesh & Blood Poison managed to reach the UK Top Ten, where the album reached number three.

Frank Trojan ( Rock Hard ) wrote that he “almost had the hope that this record would be really good” . The “monstrous intro” introduces the “hardest and most driving track on the LP” with 'Valley of Lost Souls' . It is a piece "almost like the old Mötley Crüe manner" . Then follows "for the most part the expected pop metal dripping with commerce, exactly and perfectly styled like the disgusting outfit" of the band. Producer Bruce Fairbairn “did a first class job and breathed life into the record” . Even if the album was “not a revelation” , the band “first and foremost improved musically” . There are “also remarkable keyboard parts like the great 'Something To Believe In', a real superballad” . However, 95 percent of the material is "trivialities tailored to a specific group of buyers" , which " guaranteed platinum status again in the states" , but in Europe would probably only "cause the underage" Bravo "audience to get wet" .

Metal Hammer came to the verdict, "twelve songs, an intro and a guitar game in which CC De Ville made no secret of its faves for Cajun" - the new Poison had "a lot to offer." Motto, but less “through looks, than through good hooks and technically competent performance.” There is “once again a healthy mixture of Poison-typical rockers à la Love On The Rocks (the title track and Don't Give ) on Flesh & Blood Up an Inch ), poppy radio faves ( Unskinny Bop , Ride The Wind ) and pompous ballads ( Life Goes On , the better one , Something To Believe In the better). ”All in all, it is“ a balanced and carefree album . "

Allmusic's Steve Huey commented that with 'Flesh & Blood' Poison "made an offer to be taken seriously" . Even the title "suggests the desire for more substance and reality in music" from the band. There are also "sleazy elements like the top five hit 'Unskinny Bop'" , but "essentially the band on the album shy away from the well-known party anthems" . Sometimes it works “surprisingly well” . Compared to earlier recordings, Flseh & Blood is "by no means a bad album, it is just not what Poison does best" .

In the United States, the album was awarded a gold record on September 5, 1990. To date, the album has sold more than 6 million copies in the United States alone, which was reflected in its triple platinum award on February 14, 1991.
