The Floßkanal (also Ländkanal ) is a river in the Thalkirchen district of Munich . It was built at the end of the 19th century for rafting on the Isar as an entrance to the new central area . Today tourist raft trips take place on it and it is used as a canoe route.

The raft channel branches off from the Isar-Werkkanal shortly before the Hinterbrühler See . The bronze sculpture Der Isarflößer by Fritz Koelle stands in the corner between the Isar-Werkkanal and the raft Canal . Immediately after the branch there is a raft slide in the raft channel .

At the Thalkirchen campsite, the raft channel widens to form the raft land , also known as the central raft land or central land . Since it is much wider than the raft channel, the water flows more calmly there and the rafts can dock.

The canal is called Mühlbach from the water overflow of the raft landing near the restaurant Zentrallände . It flows through the Maria Einsiedel natural pool and flows back into the Isar-Werkkanal just below the Thalkirchner Brücke .

Of the total length of the river course of 2.3 km, the raft canal itself accounts for around 950 m, the central area around 500 m and the Mühlbach around 850 m. The water flow is around 8 cubic meters per second.

Branches

Maria-Einsiedelbach

Just below the Gasthof Hinterbrühl at the level of the Hinterbrühler See, the Maria-Einsiedelbach branches off from the raft canal. It flows along the lower slope edge on the left edge of the Isaraue and flows into the Mühlbach in the Maria Einsiedel natural pool. It only carries a small amount of water of around 100 l / s. He used to run the Maria-Einsiedel-Mühle , which stood in the Maria Einsiedel part of the municipality of Thalkirchen, near today's Asam-Schlössl .

Tributaries

Wenzbach

The only major tributary of the raft canal is the Wenzbach , which rises in the Adolf-Wenz settlement belonging to Pullach in the Isar valley and flows into the raft canal after about 1 km just after the raft canal junction from the Isar works canal.

The two smaller outflows of the Hinterbrühler See , which is fed by the Isar-Werk canal , also flow into the raft canal.

use

Canoe slalom on the raft channel
Surfing at the raft landing

The raft canal is the last section of the route that the large rafts - used for entertainment - made of mighty tree trunks cover when they travel down the Isar from Wolfratshausen . Shortly before Munich, the rafts are directed into the Isar factory canal and from there into the raft canal, where they finally land at the central site.

The raft canal and raft landing also serve as the official canoe route. The numerous Munich canoe clubs use the route as a training area. Important competitions such as the Munich Canoe Triathlon or the Munich Canoe Slalom take place here every year.

The canal is also used by surfers: the standing wave at the confluence of the raft canal with the raft landing is one of the most famous in Europe and, after the Eisbach, the second major surfing spot in Munich.
