Flodaigh , also called Floday , is a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides . It is located in the council area of the same name and was historically part of the traditional county of Ross-shire or the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty .

geography

In Loch Roag Bay, off the Isle of Lewis, there are two islands called Flodaigh. The island described here is located in the outer bay about one kilometer northwest and west of Great Bernera and Little Bernera . Bearasay is one kilometer north and Harsgeir is 1.1 kilometers southwest.

The island has a maximum length of 470 meters and a width of 420 meters. The highest point on the flat island rises 22 meters above sea level.

history

Flodaigh, now uninhabited, may have been inhabited once. Ruins of huts can still be found on the island today. An east-west oriented foundation suggests a chapel. It may be a retreat for the people of Pabay Mor or Little Bernera.

One of the ruins may be the home of the former Irish priest Cornelius Con . After this was initially set at Eilean Donan Castle by the Earls of Seaforth , he was brought to Flodaigh in 1691, where Con, allegedly without fortified accommodation, remained lonely until 1696. It is believed, however, that he did have a place to live. Food was supplied to Con every six weeks. He was later isolated first on North Rona and then moved to Edinburgh Castle .
