Pabay Mor , Scottish Gaelic Pabaigh Mòr , is a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides . It is located in the council area of the same name and was historically part of the traditional county of Ross-shire or the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty .

geography

Pabay Mor is located in Loch Roag Bay off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis . The island lies between Great Bernera and Lewis, from which it is separated by 2.7 kilometers and 370 meters of waterways, respectively. The little sister island Pabay Beg lies to the north. At its narrowest point, it is just 70 meters away from Pabay Mor. Vacasay is around 450 meters southeast. The village of Valtos is opposite on Lewis .

The island has a maximum length of 1.7 kilometers and a width of no more than 890 meters. This results in an area of 101  hectares . Its highest point rises 68 meters above sea level. There are two small freshwater lakes on Pabay Mor.

history

The now uninhabited island was inhabited until 1827. That year, their population was evicted as part of the Highland Clearances in order to make grazing land for sheep.

Pabay Mor has a long history of settlement. A stone arrangement in the northwest of the island could indicate settlement in the Stone or Bronze Age . Various artifacts found on the northeast coast and a burial site are believed to date from the Bronze Age. Various cairns and remains of huts document the settlement over a long period of time.

Pabay Mor once owned a chapel with St Peter's Church . It was located in the southeast part of the island. Their remains are now listed as a Scheduled Monument .
