Florian Hufsky (June 2007)

Florian Hufsky (born November 13, 1986 in Villach , Carinthia ; † December 16, 2009 in Vienna ) was an Austrian media artist and political activist.

Life

Florian Hufsky was born in Villach, graduated from the Technical College in Villach in 2006 and then studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . However, he died before he could graduate, at the age of 23. Hufsky was founder and board member of the Pirate Party Austria and the Graffiti Research Lab Vienna (whose laser tag version is used worldwide) as well as the startup soup.io. In addition, Hufsky created the popular Super Mario derivative Super Mario War and was a member of the programmer and designer group 72dpiarmy and the hackerspace Metalab .

Media art

Florian Hufsky and Michael Zeltner campaigned for the spread of laser tagging in Vienna. In this form of public art, an image is projected onto public surfaces, usually walls. For this purpose, the two artists further developed software published as open source by the New York Graffiti Research Lab (GRL) . As a media artist, Hufsky took part in the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz and the DigiTaika digital art festival in Helsinki . The projects of the GRL offshoot, which he co-founded, were regularly shown in the MuseumsQuartier .

The open source game Super Mario War , which he helped to develop, uses elements of the classic Super Mario games , but offers a significantly expanded game concept thanks to the multiplayer aspect. Version 1.7 of the game provided more than 270 levels, 17 different game modes and a level editor.

Political commitment

One of Florian Hufsky's concerns as a representative of the Austrian Pirate Party was to make a right to private copying possible in the digital age. Furthermore, privacy must also be a central issue for the pirate parties. As part of his activities for the Pirate Party, Hufsky organized the first international conference of pirate parties in 2007, which resulted in the establishment of Pirate Parties International in 2010 .
