The Erbil International Airport ( IATA : EBL , ICAO : ORER ) is an airport in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in Iraq. It is located in the northwest of the city of Erbil .

The airport is managed by the Kurdish regional government in Northern Iraq. With Sulaimaniyya Airport , it is one of the two airports in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan.

history

The airport was built in 2003 to replace a military airfield operated by the Iraqi government until 1991. A first extension was opened in April 2005, shortly afterwards the airport received an ICAO code. In order to meet international standards, a completely new building was inaugurated in March 2010. It was built by the Turkish company Makyol . The cost was $ 550 million.

The airport is the hub of Zagrosjet , which flies to destinations in Turkey, Iraq and Sweden.

There are scheduled flight connections to destinations in Europe and the Middle East. Austrian Airlines flies daily to Vienna, Iraqi Airways and Lufthansa connect Erbil Airport with Frankfurt am Main three times a week. Other airlines that fly to Erbil are Atlasglobal , Pegasus Airlines , Turkish Airlines , Egypt Air , Royal Jordanian Airlines , Fly Dubai , Qatar Airways , Al Naser Airlines , Armenia Aircompany , Cham Wings Airlines , Flynas , Fly Erbil and Azerbaijan Airlines , Air Arabia , Mahan Air .

Other international destinations are Nuremberg, Cologne / Bonn, Stockholm and Rotterdam, Baku, Jeddah, Medina, Damascus, Yerevan , Sharjah, Tehran, Doha, Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya and Cairo. Domestic destinations are Baghdad , Basra , Sulaimaniyya and Najaf .

After the independence referendum in September 2017, operations for international flights were blocked by the government in Iraq. Humanitarian, diplomatic and military flights were exempt from the ban. In March 2018, operations for international flights were allowed again.

The companies active in air freight are DHL , Starlight and Mateen.

Infrastructure

The airport has a runway 4800 meters long and 75 meters wide in a north-south direction. The slope is one of the longest in the world. The landing direction 18 has an instrument landing system of the medium category (CAT II), the landing direction 36 has one of the simplest category (CAT I). Runway 15/33 is not used for take-offs or landings, but only for taxiing to or from Cargo Terminal 2. The airport has a 72,000 m² passenger terminal with a CIP area, its own VIP terminal and two freight terminals.
