The Hamilton Airport (Hamilton Airport, IATA: HLZ, ICAO NZHN) is located about 13 km south of Hamilton in the region Waikato , New Zealand .

The airport is open 24/7 and is suitable for aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 767 .

history

During the Second World War , Hamilton was used as a base for fighter planes . After the war, in the early 1950s, the first civil, commercial flights took place.

In 1988 the runway was expanded to meet the needs of international air traffic to and from Australia . In 1989 the New Zealand state sold the airport to a newly established operating company - Waikato Regional Airport Limited - which is half owned by the Hamilton City Council and to a smaller extent owned by the various district governments of the Waikato region. In the 1990s, domestic air traffic developed well and the first international flights took place in 1996. In 1995 the terminal for regional flights was expanded and in 1996 the terminal for international traffic followed in order to attract more airlines. In the meantime, the airport was therefore called Hamilton International Airport . In 2005 another expansion was started, with the buildings to be enlarged by 60% by the end of 2007.

International flights were mainly carried out by Pacific Blue Airlines before it was incorporated into Virgin Australia as part of a restructuring . in October 2012, Virgin Australia suspended the last international flights. Since the 2014/15 fiscal year , it has therefore only been marketed as Hamilton Airport .

As of 2019 there are only domestic flights to Auckland , Great Barrier Island , North Shore , Palmerston North , Wellington and Whakatane .
