The Sønderborg Airport ( Danish Sønderborg Lufthavn ) is an airport in Denmark near the city of Sønderborg ( German  Sonderburg ). Its catchment area mainly includes southern Denmark and northern Schleswig-Holstein.

history

The airport goes back to 1950 when Ingolf Nielsen opened the area of today's airport as a small landing area for photo flights, which he carried out with the airline Sønderjyllands Flyveselskab . This date is often defined as the opening date of the airport. Ingolf Nielsen took in 1957 the route Sønderborg - Copenhagen in the program on which was flown with very small aircraft.

In the 1960s, the landing field was expanded into an airport. In 1960 hangars were built and the apron paved. In 1961, construction work began on a new runway , which was put into operation in 1964 with a total length of 900 meters, 450 meters of which was paved in the middle. In 1965 the paved length was extended to 800 meters; 100 meters remained unpaved at the two ends of the runway. From 1966 the airport was expanded to become the airport of the city of Sønderborg with regional political support. In 1969 the airport was officially opened as Sønderborg Airport with a runway length of 1200 meters after various expansion measures, including the construction of many new airport buildings.

In the following decades the airport was used by civil air traffic. Similarly, expansion and modernization measures were undertaken again and again. In 1975 the runway was extended by a further 300 to 1500 meters, and additional hangars and a new fire station were built in the 1990s. In 2000 the runway was extended to the current 1797 meters. In the years that followed, the maintenance area was also expanded with additional hangars, the aprons expanded and new passenger facilities built. Today the airport is partly owned by municipal authorities. The maintenance centers at the airport are in the hands of various private companies.

Air traffic

Currently there is only one regular flight connection from the airport , which runs from Sønderborg to the Danish capital, Copenhagen. The route was flown several times a day by the airline Danish Air Transport ( Cimber Sterling until May 2012 ), mostly with aircraft of the type ATR 42 with space for 46 passengers. The track was designed by Danish Air Transport reinstated on July 27, 2013.

Since June 17, 2013, the newly founded airline Alsie Express has been the only operator to fly the Sønderborg-Copenhagen-Sønderborg route up to five times a day. An ATR 72 aircraft with currently 48 seats is used. The route is currently (as of March 2019) the only route operated by Alsie Express.

The airline company Air Alsie has had a maintenance center here since 1994. Free meantime the airport by the will Luftsportverein Alssund Flyveklub and the parachutist club Faldskærmsklubben Sønderborg used.
