The airport Hans Christian Andersen, Odense ( Danish : Hans Christian Andersen Airport, Odense Lufthavn , hist. Beldringe Lufthavn ) is a Danish airport . It is located on the southern Danish island of Fyn , around twelve kilometers north of the city of Odense . The airport is named after the Danish writer and poet Hans Christian Andersen .
history
During the Second World War during the occupation of Denmark , Germans began building the airport in 1943. In the following years and decades, the airport was gradually expanded and expanded.
Today's terminal and tower were built in 1970. The jet age began at the airport with domestic flights with a Boeing 737 from Maersk Air to and from Copenhagen . This required a reinforcement of the runway at the airport, which until now has only been controlled by smaller aircraft. In terms of airport use, Maersk Air continued to dominate with domestic flights in the following years.
In the 1980s, when planning the Great Belt Link, the question of the airport's economic viability arose. At the beginning of 1998, the Danish state transferred ownership of the airport to the then Province of Funen and several local municipalities; nevertheless, all scheduled flights were suspended towards the end of the year .
In the period that followed, several tour operators and investors decided to use the airport as a starting point for charter flights . The main motivation for this was to save interested travelers long journeys to neighboring airports, such as Copenhagen.
