history

The current air station was built during the Second World War by the German occupying forces in the part of Denmark that had belonged to Germany before the First World War . The Luftwaffe referred to it in the further course of the war as "Hadersleben Air Base ".

From September 2, 1944 to March 15, 1945, among other things, Air Force training units were stationed here.

After the war, the air base was taken over by the Royal Danish Flyvevåbnet, which still uses it today as a base for fighter planes, now the only one in Denmark. In the 1950s, F-84E / G , among others , were stationed here with the 730th Eskadrille from 1954 , the last of these fighter-bombers served here until 1959. The squadron, which had been in Karup for two years , was converted to the supersonic F-100D took place in 1961. In addition to the single-seaters, some F / TF-100F trainers were also used. In 1974 the F-100 of the 727th squadron came from Karup. Until the end of 1977, some T-33s were also used for training purposes .

The two remaining Danish F-100 squadrons were converted to the F-16A / B , which are still flown today , in 1980 and 1982. Until the other combat squadrons were disbanded at other stations, they were mainly used as fighter-bombers ; extensive modernization in 2003, as a multi-role combat aircraft .

Flyvevåbnet , which was set up in 1950, held a major flight day in Skrydstrup on 6 June 2010 on the occasion of its 60th birthday, which was attended by 150,000 visitors.

The modernization with a view to the arrival of the ordered F-35A began in summer 2020.
