The airfield Vergiate is located in the northern Italian region of Lombardy , about 50 kilometers north-west of Milan , 20 kilometers southwest of Varese and ten kilometers north of Milano Malpensa Airport . Vergiate Airfield is a works airfield of the Leonardo company .

Transport links

The airport is easily accessible from the Malpensa airport terminal on the Somma Lombardo and Vergiate road, and from the center of Milan on the A8 and A8dir motorways. Vergiate is on the Domodossola – Milan railway line , which runs right past the airport.

Infrastructure and use

The airfield has an 800 meter long asphalt runway that runs in a north-south direction (16/34). Aprons and production facilities are mainly located in the west of the runway, right next to the aforementioned railway line. There is another apron in the east. The airfield can only be used to a very limited extent by general aviation .

history

The Vergiate airfield, which opened in 1938, was originally the factory airfield of the SIAI-Marchetti company , which was later taken over by Agusta and then together with Finmeccanica . SIAI-Marchetti, which at the time was called Savoia-Marchetti, produced flying boats in neighboring Sesto Calende in the 1920s and 1930s and needed an airfield for land planes nearby. After the Second World War, the company was soon able to resume operations as the airfield was only slightly damaged. The Aeroclub Vergiate emerged from the SIAI-Marchetti sports aviation group in 1956, which later had to move to Biella airport due to capacity reasons and the proximity of the major Malpensa airport .

Others

  • Leonardo maintains other production facilities on the east side of Malpensa Airport, near Cascina Costa .
  • Vergiate Airport should not be confused with Varese-Venegono Airport , another nearby Leonardo SpA factory airfield
