Visit of the barge in the port of Hamburg

For mobile use on the water, the church has an additional launch calledJohann Hinrich Wichern ”, named after the founder of pastoral care for inland navigation in Hamburg. The church comes to the barges at work. Inland skippers are on the move on the Lower, Middle and Upper Elbe. The cargoes of the barges are z. B. sulfuric acid, grain, rapeseed. The barge from the Flussschifferkirche is used to approach around 20 inland waterway vessels that are moored in the port of Hamburg. The volunteer helpers and deacons bring apples, chocolate and a newspaper as a welcome gift. If necessary, discussions are also held.

The operation of the river boat church and the associated pontoon costs around 70,000 euros annually. In December 2006 it became known that due to financial difficulties of the church district Alt-Hamburg the maintenance of the river boatman church is no longer secured. The sponsorship was therefore transferred to a private association in 2007. The church lost its status as an independent congregation as a result, but it remains as a place for worship. Since then, the Flussschifferkirche has been looked after by various pastors on a voluntary basis.
