Fodele ( Greek Φόδελε [ ˈfɔðɛlɛ ] ( n. Sg. )) Is a village with 457 inhabitants on Crete about 20 kilometers west of Heraklion . Together with Paralia Fodele and a monastery of St. Panteleimon, it forms the village of the same name in the parish of Gazi in the parish of Malevizi . The main source of income is orange growing . Fodele is located between wide orange groves on a crystal clear river.

Fodele has been referred to as the birthplace of the artist El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos). However, it is now recognized in art history that he - as stated by himself - was born in Heraklion (then: Candia). El Greco worked as an icon painter before he settled in Toledo after a stint with Titian in Italy . Next to his (alleged) parental home there is also a small El Greco museum with reproductions of his works.

Another attraction in Fodele is a small Byzantine cross- domed church from the 11th century. It houses in its interior well-preserved frescoes and a relief from marble .
