Fons van Wissen (1963)

Gerardus Jacobus Alphonsus "Fons" van Wissen (born March 21, 1933 in Margraten , Limburg , † July 7, 2015 in Best , Noord-Brabant ) was a Dutch football player . As a professional he was active for MVV Maastricht , PSV Eindhoven and Helmond Sport . From 1957 to 1964 he made 30 international appearances for the Dutch national team .

Career

Fons van Wissen, the youngest child of 14 siblings, played in childhood and adolescence like five of his brothers at RKVVM in his hometown of Margraten; The midfielder made his debut in the first team at the age of 15 - usually he was later to play half right . In 1952 he moved to MVV in Maastricht, about ten kilometers away, where he made his debut in the top division, the then Eerste class . He also trained as a customs broker. Until 1958 he played with the Limburgers, from 1956 in the newly created Eredivisie . For the 1958/59 season he moved to PSV in Eindhoven; at Philips he got a job in his learned profession. In nine years he played 232 games for PSV, scoring 25 goals. The highlight was in 1963 the first PSV championship since the introduction of professional football. Then van Wissen completed his career with two seasons at Helmond Sport , where he contributed to promotion to the Eredivisie in 1968. Subsequent to his time as a grass soccer player, he became Dutch indoor soccer champions in 1970 with the De Van Wissen Boys team .

In the national team, Fons van Wissen made his debut on April 28, 1957 in a friendly against Belgium . Against the same opponent he scored one goal each in his internationals three and four; in the 7-2 victory in Antwerp on April 13, 1958, he stood as a center forward in an attack line with Piet van der Kuil , Faas Wilkes , Abe Lenstra and Coen Moulijn . His worst defeat, he later said, was the 7-0 defeat in Cologne against the DFB selection on October 21, 1959, which thousands of spectators from the neighboring Netherlands witnessed in the Müngersdorfer Stadium .
