Força Réal is a small but striking, 507 m high mountain peak in Fenouillèdes , a region in the north of Roussillon .
location
The mountain, located about 28 km (driving distance) northwest of Perpignan , towers over the fertile plains in the east of Roussillon. From the towns of Millas and Montner , an asphalt road leads up the mountain, the two peaks of which are popular vantage points.
history
By the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258 , the northern part of Catalonia was assigned to the Kingdom of Aragón . Jaume II , the younger son of the Aragonese king Jaume I , added it 18 years later to the Kingdom of Mallorca , which had existed since 1229 and which he had inherited from his father. During this time a castle was built on the prominent rock peak of the mountain, which at that time was still called Mont Ner (= "black mountain"); In popular parlance, however, the name Força Réal (= "royal fortress") soon caught on . At the latest with the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659) and the shift of the Spanish-French border to the south, the small fortress lost all strategic importance. In 1693, Louis XIV had it torn down; a hermitage was built from the stones .
hermitage
The Hermitage was inaugurated with a bell consecration in 1708 . Until the outbreak of the French Revolution, it was the target of a procession starting from Millas . The chapel was restored between 1819 and 1822 and the annual pilgrimage began again.
