The Force 5 is a single-handed dinghy built in the USA in Long Island , New York by Weeks Yacht Yard as a unit class . Outside the US, the boat is not very common. It is similar to the much more well-known laser , but differs from it in the form of the chine hull, extended trim options and a slightly larger cockpit so that two people can find space on the boat. Around 15,000 units have been built so far.
history
The Force 5 was designed in 1972 by Fred Scott and Jack Evans for AMF Alcort. AMF manufactured the boats in increasing numbers and by the 1970s the boat and class were very popular in the US. The boat had a suggested list price of $ 849.00 in 1973. In 1974 it was considered the fastest growing unit class in the States. Over 12,000 units had been built by 1989, when Pearson Small Boats, then owned by AMF, was bought by SLI, which also owned the rights to the laser . Since the boats were similar, the focus was only on one model. The laser caught on and the production of Force 5 boats ceased. Since 1993 Force are 5 of Weeks Yacht Yard in Patchogue in the Great South Bay produced by Long Iceland.
Rig
The Force 5 has full trim options , including a cunningham , leech, boom vang, and traveler . For attachment to the mast there is a so-called mast pocket on the luff , with which the sail is simply threaded onto the three-part aluminum mast . An optionally available smaller junior sail with a sail area of 5.76 m² is recommended for people with a body weight of less than 84 kg. The rudder and sword are available in lacquered mahogany , but also in fiberglass-reinforced plastic .
Meaning of the boat name and the class symbol
"Force 5", or "Windforce 5" means "wind force 5". The class symbol is borrowed from the weather map symbol for a wind speed of 21-25 knots (38-46 km / h).
