Forge of Empires (short: FoE) is a browser-based strategy game that was developed by InnoGames and published in 2012. Eight weeks after the public beta began, Forge of Empires hit the one million player mark.

game

The aim of the real-time strategy game is to lead your village through different ages (from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages to the present and beyond to space travel). A limited building space is available for this purpose, which can be gradually expanded. In terms of resources, you have a certain number of coins and supplies at the beginning . Coins are collected from residential buildings and supplies are made in production facilities. In addition to the construction area on which the player builds his city consisting of houses, cultural buildings, barracks, production facilities and goods buildings, the game contains a timeline on which the individual ages are marked, a battle area on which the respective armies fight and a map of the continents whose provinces must be conquered by the player.

An age is characterized by different stages of social development. In order to advance in an age or to enter a new age, technologies, new residential buildings, production facilities, combat units or cultural institutions must be researched. On the one hand, forge points are required, which can either be bought with coins or diamonds or automatically received one point per hour, as well as coins, supplies and goods such as stones, wood, iron etc. that are manufactured in specific goods buildings . These goods buildings are also unlocked in the different ages by researching technologies. The goods can either be obtained in a peaceful manner through production and trade with fellow players, or through attacks on neighbors , i.e. other human players and / or computer-controlled opponents that can be found on the map of the continents . For successful military attacks you get success points, which are measured by the strength of the defeated defending army and the damage suffered. In turn-based combat mode, the defending army is always controlled by the computer. Depending on the epoch of the most valuable unit deployed, you will be listed in a PvE ranking of the corresponding age, which can be viewed on the map of the continents in the form of different towers. Every week, the top places receive medals that can be exchanged for expansion of the building site and additional trains in the guild expedition.

The fields of the map of the continents, which is divided into provinces , can be revealed by using coins. In order to conquer the revealed province, you can either negotiate with the computer-controlled opponent and pay with goods or defeat him in battle mode. Captured provinces contain either expansions of the building site, goods deposits that significantly increase production in the goods buildings concerned (e.g. the clay deposits increase the production of brick in brickworks, gold nuggets increase the production of gold in goldsmiths, etc.) or rewards in Form of coins or supplies. The provinces are also linked to the progress of research, so that you can only take a certain number at a time.

Furthermore, there is the possibility of polishing cultural or decorative buildings of neighboring players, which increases the satisfaction of the population and thus their production, or to motivate residential buildings and production facilities, whereby the work performance in the building in question is doubled. For this form of cooperation, which is possible every 24 hours for each player, you receive coins, in rare cases blueprints for legendary buildings such as B. the Dresden Frauenkirche , the Colosseum or the Hagia Sophia . These legendary structures can only be built once you have received all the parts of the blueprint. You have to rely on the support of other players who, as patrons with their forge points, enable expansion and further development across different levels. Depending on how high the relative support was compared to other players in the building in question, you will be rewarded as a patron with medals, construction plans or forge points. Billing will take place here as soon as the legendary structure has reached the next level. The legendary buildings give the owner increasing bonuses on population, goods, coins or supplies production as well as various combat bonuses as they expand.

In addition, since January 2019, you have had the opportunity to build a second settlement next to the actual settlement by traveling as an "ambassador" to various peoples. So far, the Vikings and feudal Japan are available, but other selectable races will follow (Egyptians have already been announced). In the course of this city you receive a series of quests that you have to solve in order to complete your task as ambassador. The faster you do this, the better rewards you will get afterwards.

In 2017, over 50 million players were registered for the game.

Updates

On June 7th, 2012, a first, larger update was installed which, in addition to some bug fixes, also contains new features. Now players can join forces in guilds, for example, in order to be able to communicate and act better. The point system has also been revised and a global ranking list with all players and guilds has been introduced so that you can compete with others.

On October 15, 2012, the colonial era was unlocked. In 2013 the industrial age and the turn of the century followed. In 2014 the game was expanded to include modern, post-modern and the present. In 2015, tomorrow and the future were added. The Arctic Future was playable from 2016. From 2017 to 2018, the Oceanic Future was published in several parts. The first part of the Virtual Future was published in mid-July 2018. On May 28, 2019, the Age of Space: Mars was released.

With Update 1.20, which was installed on February 25, 2014, the guild battle feature found its way into Forge of Empires. This optional feature enables players organized in guilds to compete with other guilds in guild vs. guild mode (GvG) on specially designed, persistent multiplayer maps, which is a special form of PvP (player vs. Player), only with the difference that here it is not individual players but entire guilds that compete.

In November 2016, the friends tavern was introduced, which you can visit every day to receive tavern silver or Forge points . In addition, the so-called guild expedition was introduced at the end of 2016 , in which every player in the guild has the opportunity to play an expedition card and thus advance the guild.

In January 2019 the Vikings introduced the first cultural settlement, and Feudal Japan was added in July 2019 . In July 2019, the antique dealer appeared , with which you can sell unneeded items.

Historical quest lines

So-called historical quest series have been held regularly since October 2015 . As a rule, these quest lines are dedicated to a historical figure whose story is told while the player solves given tasks. If all tasks are successfully completed, the player receives, among other things, a portrait of the respective person, which he can assign to his playing figure. Previous historical quest lines:

In addition to these, there are also quest series that are based on various events in real life , e.g. B. the Forge Bowl .

financing

As with every other game from InnoGames , the game is basically free of charge. However, in the game for money you can buy so-called diamonds as game currency. These diamonds can be used in the game to unlock buildings, research, resources, combat units and new areas. In addition, in some events you can buy special "event currencies" with diamonds. This has been criticized by the community, because players can buy advantages that a player without money can catch up with and thus progress comparatively more slowly in the individual ages. The business model corresponds to a freemium and pay-to-win model.
