Calocedrus formosana is a species of incense cedar ( Calocedrus ). It is a highly endangered endemic in the northern and central part of the island of Taiwan .
description
Calocedrus formosana grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 23 meters. The trunk often grows curved and the smooth bark is purple-reddish brown in color.
The cross-opposed leaves , usually arranged in whorls in groups of four, are dimorphic along the branches , so there are two different leaf shapes. The vertical pair of leaves is flattened and the lateral pair of leaves is boat-shaped. The 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters large, scale-shaped leaves have a base that descends on the branch and a blunt upper end. The upper surface of the leaf is dark green and the lower surface is pale green.
The cones, which are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long, are slightly curved. They contain four cone scales, two of which do not carry seeds. The two other cone scales each bear one or two, 8 to 12 millimeter large, winged seeds.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Occurrence
The natural range of Calocedrus formosana includes the north and the center of Taiwan .
Calocedrus formosana thrives at altitudes of 33 to 1900 meters. It grows mainly in evergreen mixed and cloud forests .
use
Calocedrus formosana is used, among other things, as firewood.
Systematics
It was first described as Libocedrus formosana in 1930 by Carl Rudolf Florin in Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift 24 126, p. 2. In 1956, Carl Rudolf Florin transferred this species to Taxon , Volume 5 (8), p. 192 in the genus of incense cedars ( Calocedrus ). Other synonyms for Calocedrus formosana (Florin) Florin include Calocedrus macrolepis var. Formosana (Florin) WCCheng & LKFu , Heyderia formosana (Florin) HLLi and Libocedrus macrolepis var. Formosana (Florin) Kudô .
Hazard and protection
Calocedrus formosana is listed as "critically endangered" on the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new check of the risk is necessary. The main reasons given are logging and the conversion of forests to forestry use.
