Museum research center is a documentary film of the DEFA studios for popular science films of defiance Meinl from the year 1968 .

action

A night watchman walks through the Berlin Museum of Natural History , which is part of the Humboldt University and is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. However, the imprint of an ancient bird and the skeleton of the largest land animal from the Mesozoic , the Brachiosaurus , are not of primary interest in this film, because the aim here is to take a look behind the scenes of a museum. Only a fraction of what is estimated here at around 25 million specimens is open to the public. These include many specimens that were the first of their kind to be discovered and that form the starting point for further scientific research.

In the Natural History Museum, scientists from other countries also occasionally work on researching the species and their classification into scientific categories. But from year to year the group of lay people from the most varied of professions, who spend their free time studying nature, is growing. Here in the museum you will find advice, suggestions and tasks for your hobby . For example, there is the GDR fauna research assignment , on which lay people also work, but who must have a high level of scientific qualification. Your task is to find out the connections between the location of plants and animals and their relationships to one another. The result already shows that in the areas where the lay researchers work, there have been no more harmful insects for years and enormous sums of money can be saved for chemical pest control.

The collaboration between laypeople and academic staff extends to the coast of Cuba . Due to their high level of knowledge, they are able to mine a coral reef here . It will be some time before this can be admired in the museum, because it is to be exhibited in the middle of its other surroundings. Fish and plants should enliven it in a lifelike tropical color scheme. The reef is simulated as a 10 meter long three-dimensional diagram , because the diorama created here does not yet exist in all of Europe and dioramas are the showpieces of every exhibition.
