The Fort Cigogne is a fortification on the Ile Cigogne in Finistère department in France . It is on the territory of the municipality of Fouesnant .

history

The military commander in Brittany, Pierre de Montesquiou d'Artagnan , had suggested the construction of a fortification as early as 1717, mainly to prevent the Glénan Islands from being occupied by English and Dutch privateers . A first plan was not implemented, the completion could only take place in 1755. In general, the construction of Fort de Penthièvre and Fort Bloqué is also attributed to this phase.

It is a self-sufficient fort with a cistern and a bakery , and there were also dungeons . The combat systems consisted of seven meter high, granite-clad walls , in which gun casemates and accommodation casemates were partially integrated. Two batteries are specified as artillery armament.

At the end of the 19th century was home to Fort the weather station of the biological laboratory of the Marine nationale in Concarneau .

In 1899 the military use was given up.

In 1911, a 20-meter-high tower was built on the south-west corner of the wall, which served as a navigation point for shipping.

During the Second World War , the German Wehrmacht stationed a small crew in the fort .

Today there is a base of the sailing school Les Glénans here .

The fort is state owned and was added to the List of Historic Monuments on July 17, 2009 . The structural condition is described as satisfactory.
