Fortaleza is a town in the Pando department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Fortaleza is the most populous town in the canton of San Pablo in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Pedro in the province of Manuripi and is located at an altitude of 140 m . The village is located on the right, southern bank of the Río Orthon , a tributary of the Río Beni .
geography
Fortaleza is located in the Bolivian part of the Amazon basin , northeast of the foothills of the Peruvian Cordillera Oriental in the tropical rainy climate of the equatorial zone .
The mean average temperature of the region is almost 26 ° C and fluctuates only insignificantly during the year and during the day, only in the dry winter months from June to August it is slightly lower due to the nocturnal heat radiation with open cloud cover (see Porvenir climate diagram). The annual precipitation is around 1,900 mm and during the rainy season shows monthly values between 150 and 300 mm for more than half of the year, only in the short dry season from June to August does the precipitation drop to monthly values below 50 mm.
Transport network
Fortaleza is about 265 kilometers as the crow flies east of Cobija , the capital of the department.
Fortaleza cannot be reached by land via paved roads. The village is located directly on the southern bank of the Río Orthon, which flows here in an easterly direction and flows 85 kilometers downstream into the Río Beni. Just ten kilometers south of Fortaleza, the Río Madre de Dios flows in an easterly direction , which also flows into the Río Beni and unites with it at the city of Riberalta . In this damp, undulating terrain made up of silted up river loops, the construction of a paved road does not make much sense for a few hundred residents.
Fortaleza can be reached either from the west by water via the town of Puerto Rico , which is 320 kilometers upstream at the confluence of the Río Manuripi and Río Tahuamanu to the Río Orthon ; or from Riberalta first 35 kilometers down the Río Beni and then 85 kilometers up the Río Orthon.
population
The population of the place has increased many times over in the past decade:
