history
Cobija was founded in 1906 by Coronel Enrique Cornejo under the name Bahía and was given its current name in 1908 in memory of the former Bolivian port city of Cobija (Lamar) on the Pacific, which has belonged to Chile since the Saltpeter War . Cobija experienced a heyday as a location for the rubber industry in the 1940s . With the collapse of the rubber boom, Cobija also declined and has only seen a renewed upswing in the past few decades.
Cobija is currently an important trading center in the region. The entire center of the city consists of shops and markets selling consumer goods. The Bolivian government set up a special customs zone around Cobija to promote trade in this remote region, so that many goods can be offered much cheaper than in Brazil. For this reason, many of the buyers from the neighboring country come to Cobija for larger purchases and the migration from other places within Bolivia (especially La Paz) to Cobija has increased significantly.
population
The population of Cobija has increased more than fivefold in the past two decades. Current estimates even assume a current population of over 60,000 and a population growth of 8 to 10% per year.
