Foscarnet is an antiviral drug ( antiviral ) that is mainly used to treat herpes viruses in the presence of resistance to other antivirals. The spectrum of activity includes the cytomegalovirus , the herpes simplex virus and the varicella zoster virus . Foscarnet is sold as the sodium salt under the brand names Foscavir ® (CH) and Triapten ® (D) and is subject to medical prescription .

pharmacology

application areas

Foscarnet is approved for the systemic treatment of a life- and eye-light-threatening disease caused by cytomegaloviruses and for the treatment of acute mucosal infections caused by aciclovir-resistant herpes viruses in patients with AIDS . Foscarnet is also used as an alternative in the case of herpes simplex encephalitis in the case of existing aciclovir resistance. The application is intravenous. The half-life in the blood is 3.3–6.8 hours. In addition, Foscarnet can be used locally for the treatment of skin and mucous membrane infections caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, such as herpes labialis , herpes genitalis and herpes integumentalis .

Mechanism of action

Foscarnet is an analogue of pyrophosphate . As such, it blocks the pyrophosphate binding site of DNA polymerase and reverse transcriptase and is thus a selective inhibitor of these viral enzymes .
