The Four Pickled Peppers were an American western swing band from North Carolina .
history
The members of the band came from Rockingham County , North Carolina , from the cities of Leaksville, Spray and Draper, which are now combined to form the community of Eden . Some of the members, like guitarists Norman Woodlieff and Esmund Harris, played with Charlie Poole , a famous spray banjo player. Woodlieff was there as the guitarist for Poole's first Columbia session, and Esmund recorded Poole's first, obscure session for OKeh Records around 1924. Fiddler Lonnie Austin played in Poole's band between 1928 and 1929 and can be heard on thirty pieces by Poole. He also worked with Kelly Harrell and his Virginia String Band , the Weaver Brothers, and HM Barnes and his Blue Ridge Ramblers .
The Four Pickled Peppers played a style enriched with pop and jazz , which was close to western swing , but the line-up of a classic string band was too small for western swing. In 1938 and 1939, the group made recordings for RCA Victor's sub-label Bluebird Records , with nearly 20 tracks recorded. The first session was held on September 30, 1938 in Rock Hill , South Carolina , while the second and final was held a year later on August 22 , 1938 in Atlanta , Georgia . During the second session, Lonnie Austin was scheduled as the pianist , but producer Frank Walker didn't want a piano in a string band, so Austin had to limit himself to the fiddle. Jolly Group of Cowboys and the single Long Lost Sweetheart / When The Golden Moon is Shining were also released in Australia via Regal-Zonophone Records .
Banjo player Hamon Newman died shortly after the last session in 1939. The band broke up, but the members were still active as musicians. Esmund Harris died in 1993 and Lonnie Austin four years later.
