The Foveaux house is a historic lookout house in the wooded Ennert ridge of the Beuel district of Bonn on the right bank of the Rhine . It is located on the Foveauxweg around 150  m above sea level. NHN on the western plateau of the Ennert mountain belonging to the Küdinghoven district . The Rhine is about 1,600 meters away.

The pavilion stands as a monument under monument protection . The Foveaux house is one of the attractions of the Ennertwald, which, as a local recreation area, has an important recreational function for the Cologne / Bonn conurbation.

history

The building was built around 1820 by an important Cologne tobacco manufacturer, Heinrich Josef Foveaux (1763–1844). Foveaux had acquired a property in this area on the Rhine that he used as a summer residence. In 1852 the lookout point was sold to the Bleibtreu family , who operated mining in Ennert on the nearby Hardt . Later there was a garden tavern next to the house. Hikers and students rested at the Foveaux house during the romantic era of the Rhine and enjoyed the view of the Siebengebirge and the Rhine Valley.

“The circular painting is indescribable, and unfolds again from this point in all the charm of its great beauty. The wide left bank of the Rhine from Bonn up to Rolandseck stretches out in its glory, and majestically towers the peaks of the Siebengebirge and the distant Linz mountains on the right bank, a sublime picture that nobody likes to part with. "

Allegedly, drinking students from Bonn let empty beer and wine barrels roll down the mountain from here.

The house was renovated in 1992 by the Küdinghoven Citizens' Association and the roof was covered with sheet copper . This metal roof was stolen at the end of 2017. In the winter of 2014, at the instigation of the citizens' association, one of the earlier, now overgrown lines of sight was restored by felling around 50 trees. Since then, the Drachenfels, about eight kilometers away, has been recognizable.

architecture

The open pavilion is in the classical style, it is reminiscent of a temple portal. The plastered triangular gable is striking . The outside wall of the house consists of hewn sandstone blocks and basalt stones from local quarries. In addition, demolition material from the ruins of the Heisterbach monastery is said to have been built.

Inside there is a seating group consisting of three stone benches and a round table. The top of the stone table rests on the remains of a column from the Heisterbach abbey church.
