Location

Commanders' building of the fortress

The Franconian Gallery is located in the former commanders' building of the Rosenberg Fortress , which was given its present appearance in the years 1730 to 1733 by the famous Baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann . The interior of the building was heavily modified for use as a museum and offers around 1000 square meters of exhibition space, spread over 13 rooms on three floors.

collection

Most of the more than 200 exhibits in the Franconian Gallery come from the holdings of the Bavarian National Museum, which in turn received a large part of the objects in 1860 from the private art collection of the Bamberg drawing teacher Martin Joseph von Reider . The National Museum acquired further pieces in the 1850s at the auction of old church properties in Weißenburg in Bavaria or received them as donations from the private collections of Gotthard Martinengo in Würzburg and Karl Streit in Bad Kissingen and from Eichstätt in Franconia at the time . The works of art from the holdings of the National Museum are supplemented, among other things, by permanent loans from the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen , the Federal Republic of Germany , the city of Kronach and the 1000 Years Kronach Association. V.

The objects on display are mainly art from the 13th to 16th centuries from all parts of Franconia . These include, among other things, two altar wings with depictions of Saints Laurentius and Stephanus , created by Hans von Kulmbach , a student of Albrecht Dürer . Several works by Wolfgang Katzheimer are examples of the art in the Bamberg Monastery , to which Kronach belonged until 1802 . A large panel from his studio shows Saint James between the two Bamberg diocese saints Kunigunde of Luxembourg and Heinrich II , who is holding a model of Bamberg Cathedral in his hands . Separate departments of the gallery are dedicated to the work of the carver and sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider and the painter and graphic artist Lucas Cranach from Kronach and their respective workshops. Other works are by Adam Kraft , Paul Lautensack and Veit Stoss . In addition to the products of Franconian artists, various exhibits from France and northwest Germany are shown.

In 2012, the Bavaria exhibition fortresses - Franconian bulwarks organized by the House of Bavarian History , which offers an overview of the history of the fortifications in Franconia, was on view in the rooms of the Franconian Gallery. A large part of the exhibits on display remained on permanent loan in Kronach after the end of the Bavaria exhibition, and since March 2013 it has been part of the Fränkische Galerie's permanent offer there, with smaller extensions.
