Frédéric Saint-Denis (born January 23, 1986 in Greenfield Park , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played for the Canadiens de Montréal and Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League during his career between 2003 and 2016 as well as EHC Red Bull Munich in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
St. Denis played during his junior years between 2003 and 2007 for the Voltigeurs de Drummondville in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . After four years there, he initially enrolled at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport .
But since the defender signed a professional contract with the Hamilton Bulldogs from the American Hockey League in September 2008 , his studies ended prematurely when he switched to the professional field. But initially they used him in their Cincinnati Cyclones farm team in the ECHL . It was not until the 2009/10 season that St. Denis made its breakthrough in the AHL. Because of his achievements, he finally received an offer from Hamilton's cooperation partner, the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League in the summer of 2010 . This put him in the following three years - with the exception of 17 NHL appearances in the 2011/12 season - continued with the Bulldogs in the AHL. In July 2013, the defender joined as a free agent in the franchise of the Columbus Blue Jackets . Also there, St. Denis was mainly used in the Springfield Falcons farm team and only played four games for Columbus himself.
After his two-year contract expired, the French-Canadian moved to Europe, where he signed up for a year at EHC Red Bull Munich from the German Ice Hockey League . With the Munich team he became German champion in the 2015/16 season . He then returned to his homeland and completed a few more games in the calendar year for the Blizzard CNS de Trois-Rivières in the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey , before retiring from active sport at the age of 30.
As a result, he accepted an offer as an assistant coach at his alma mater , the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.
