Frédérique Vidal (born May 6, 1964 in Monaco ) is a French politician (non-party). Since May 15, 2017, she has been French Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation in the Philippe Cabinet and in the subsequent Castex Cabinet .

Career

Frédérique Vidal was born in Monaco and did her Masters in Biochemistry at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis . She started her career as a biochemist at the French veterinary company Virbac .

In 1995 Vidal returned to the University of Nice as an associate professor . From 1999 to 2003 she was a member of the scientific council of the Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale . In 2012 she became a professor at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis , where she held the chair of biology from 2005 to 2008. From 2012 to 2017 she was the successor to Albert Marouani as president of the university. In the meantime, she was re-elected as President in 2016.

Vidal opposed the Circulaire Guéant , a failed proposal by Interior Minister Claude Guéant , the aim of which was to reduce the possibility for foreign non-EU students to stay in France after completing their studies.

In 2013 she was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

In May 2017, she was appointed Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation in the Philippe Cabinet .
