François Alphonse Aulard (1893)

François-Alphonse Aulard (born July 19, 1849 in Montbron , † October 23, 1928 in Paris ) was a French historian . Aulard was one of the leading historians of the French Revolution . He founded modern revolutionary historiography and his writings dispelled many of the myths that had surrounded the revolution until then.

Aulard received his doctorate in 1877. Until 1884 he taught French literature in various provincial universities. In 1879 he began studying the French Revolution. In 1887 he was appointed to the new chair for the history of the French Revolution at the University of Paris. He specialized in the documentation of the revolutionary epoch and published various collections of documents. The important scientific journal La Révolution française , founded in 1881 (it appeared until 1939), was also published under his supervision from 1888 (when Aulard became president of the Société de l'Histoire de la Revolution Française , which published it, which he remained until his death) , like various memoirs of revolutionaries.

Aulard was also politically active. He was the founder and president of the League for Human Rights , which was formed during the Dreyfus Affair , and co-founder of Quotidien , an independent democratic magazine. In 1927 he presided over the International Congress of the League of Nations in Berlin.

In 1924 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
