François-Xavier Dumortier

François-Xavier Dumortier SJ (born November 4, 1948 in Levroux , France ) is a French , Roman Catholic theologian . He served as rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University from 2010 to 2016 .

Life

François-Xavier Dumortier studied after graduating from high school in 1967 at Sciences Po Law . While working for a Parisian bank, he completed a Master of Financial Management. In 1973 he entered the religious community of the Society of Jesus and made profession in 1975 . From 1975 to 1979 he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Jesuit College Center Sèvres in Paris, then theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts . He received his doctorate in legal philosophy from the University of Paris II . After his ordination in 1982 he was until 1985 for the magazine Études of Paul Valadier worked and conducted research on the life work of Hannah Arendt . In 1991 he became Deputy Rector and in 1997, succeeding René Marlé, Rector of the Center Sèvres. He is Professor of Philosophy and Philosophical Ethics at the Center Sèvres and at the Institut Catholique de Paris . In 2003 he became Provincial of France to the Society of Jesus.

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed François-Xavier Dumortier Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University. He succeeded Gianfranco Ghirlanda , who has been in office since 2004, on September 1, 2010. He held this office until September 1, 2016. In November 2017 he was considered a candidate for the new appointment of the Archdiocese of Paris .
