Francesc Xavier Arnau Grabulosa (born May 23, 1975 in Les Planes d'Hostoles , Girona ) is a former Spanish football goalkeeper who was active at FC Barcelona and FC Málaga .

Club career

Arnau joined FC Barcelona's youth department at the age of 14 . There he was accepted into the third reserve team in the 1994/95 season. In the following season he was promoted to the second team and immediately became a regular player. On November 9, 1996 Arnau played for the first time for the first team of FC Barcelona during the 3-3 draw in the league against Athletic Bilbao . At Barcelona he always remained the substitute goalkeeper in his five years with the first team. In the first season Vítor Baía was set, in the following seasons Ruud Hesp and Richard Dutruel . With Barcelona he won in 1999 the Spanish championship , the 1997 Spanish Cup , the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup .

In 2001 he left Barcelona to play for Malaga FC from then on . In his first season at Málaga he also did not get a chance and only played 3 league appearances because he could not get past regular goalkeeper Pedro Contreras . When Contreras joined Betis Sevilla in 2003 , Arnau was promoted to number 1 at Málaga and later even became team captain. In 2006 he was relegated to the Segunda División with Malaga FC . In the 2007/08 re-promotion season, Arnau lost his regular place to Iñaki Goitia . In the 2008/09 season , Arnau played the first eleven and the last two league games of the season. In 2009 Málaga sold Iñaki Goitia to Betis Sevilla, but bought Gustavo Munúa at the same time , so that Arnau had to come to terms with the status of substitute goalkeeper again. In 2011 he ended his career with FC Málaga and became a youth coach with the club.

National team career

In 1998 Arnau played an outstanding European Championship with Spain's U-21 team, which in the end also won the tournament. Arnau did not allow a single goal in the three knockout games and was voted player of the tournament.
