Francesco Azopardi
Francesco Az (z) opardi (full name: Giovanni Bat (t) ista Agostino Francesco Giuseppe Azopardi; born May 5, 1748 in Mdina (Città Notabile), † February 6, 1809 in Rabat ) was a Maltese composer , organist, music teacher and Music theorist.
Life
Francesco Azopardi received his musical training first in Malta with Michelangelo Vella († 1792) and during his stay in Naples from 1763 to 1774 . On October 15, 1763 he was accepted as a boarding school student at the Conservatorio di Sant 'Onofrio a Porta Capuana in Naples . He studied with Carlo Contumacci († 1785) and Joseph Doll († 1774). In 1767 he left the Conservatory but stayed as Kapellmeister in Naples and continued his studies with Niccolò Piccinni . In 1768 he made his first church music composition, a mass. In Naples worked as a music teacher who taught both privately and in monasteries. Occasionally during this time he traveled to Malta. In 1772 he gave the cathedral chapter in Mdina a setting of Mass and a setting of Dixit Dominus . This test of his work should clarify his abilities and make the chapter weighed for a possible later employment as Kapellmeister. After Vincenzo Zerafa's death in Naples in December 1773, the position of organist at the cathedral in Mdina became vacant. In 1774 he returned to Malta at the invitation of Bishop Pellerano and was hired on April 12, 1774 as organist at the Cathedral of Mdina . Associated with this position was the right to succeed the current conductor, cum Futura successione . In Mdina he worked with the conductor Benigno Zerafa (1726-1804), an uncle of Vincenzo Zerafa. Zerafa was probably a friend of the Azopardis family and had probably already supported him with his admission to the Conservatory in Naples. In 1789 he became Kapellmeister at the St. John's Cokthedral in Valletta . In 1804 he became Zerafa's successor himself Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Mdina. Nicolas Isouard was one of his students. Azopardi died in Rabat on February 6, 1809.

Il Musico Prattico
Francesco Azopardi was best known for his theoretical work Il Musico Prattico. A .. [The trained music or lessons that guide students in the art of counterpoint, teaching the proper way of composing any type of music. A multi-part work according to the principles of the Conservatories of Italy and put in the simplest and clearest order by Francesco Azopardi]. The two-volume French translation Le Musicien Pratique by Nicolas-Étienne Framéry was published in Paris in 1786 . It became a very influential work. In 1809 Azopardi published another edition. In 1824 a one-volume edition by Alexandre-Étienne Choron was published in Paris . It was used as a text book at the Paris Conservatory. François-Joseph Fétis judged the work to be mediocre, but Luigi Cherubini cited many examples in his own music theory work Cours de contrepoint et de Fugue [Course of counterpoint and fugue] from 1835.
