Francesco Sgalambro (born April 16, 1934 in Lentini , Province of Syracuse , Italy ; † August 11, 2016 in Messina ) was Bishop of Cefalù .

Life

In 1949 Sgalambro entered the Archbishopric Seminary "San Pio X." in Messina. In the years 1954 to 1957 he completed his theological studies at the theological faculty "San Luigi" in Naples and was ordained a priest on September 22, 1957 . He then received his doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University . From 1958 he worked as a professor of philosophy at the Archbishopric of Messina and from 1977 at the Istituto Teologico "San Tommaso" in Messina.

On February 22, 1986 Francesco Sgalambro was appointed titular bishop of Minturno and auxiliary bishop in Messina by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination on April 5, 1986 in the Cathedral of Messina by the Archbishop of Palermo Salvatore Cardinal Pappalardo ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Messina, Ignazio Cannavò , and the Old Bishop of Caltagirone , Carmelo Canzonieri .

In the Sicilian Episcopal Conference, Sgalambro was the head of the delegation for seminars. On March 18, 2000, he was appointed Bishop of Cefalù , the solemn inauguration took place on Pentecost Sunday, June 11, 2000, in the Cathedral of Cefalù .

On September 17, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. Francesco Sgalambro died on August 11, 2016 and was buried two days later in the Cathedral of Cefalù. The funeral mass also took place on August 13, 2016 in Messina.
