Francesco Zannetti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francesco Zannetti or Zanetti (* 27. March 1737 in Volterra , † 31 January 1788 in Perugia ) was an Italian composer of the pre-classical and opera singer (tenor).

Life

In his youth, Francesco Zannetti received singing, violin, organ and harpsichord lessons from Giovanni Carlo Clari , the conductor at the Cathedral of Pisa, and during this time he already had jobs as a violinist and tenor in Lucca . From 1757 he studied at the Conservatorio dell Pietà Turchini in Naples . In 1760 he was accepted into the Accademia Filarmonica Bologna. From 1762 he was Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in his hometown of Volterra, where he was dismissed for appearances in his operas that were incompatible with his position. Then from 1762 to 1788 he was Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia. There he was also music director at the Teatro del Pavone and at the Teatro dell'Aquilla .

Zanetti was a versatile musician who mastered numerous instruments. As a composer, he belonged to the generation who were committed to baroque counterpoint , but were still able to make the transition to the pre-classical, gallant tonal language.

Zannetti's stay in London, which François-Joseph Fétis and Robert Eitner mentioned in their music lexicons, is not considered certain. This assumption came about because Zannetti had several collections printed by the London publisher John Welcker. But, as was not unusual at the time, this was done through intermediaries.

As the conductor of important churches, Zannetti set numerous works for sacred use, including numerous masses, cantatas, psalms, responsories, the Magnificat, two Requiem, a St. John and St. Matthew Passion and other works.
