Gortzius Geldorp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gortzius Geldorp , also: Gualdrop Gortzius (* 1553 in Löwen , † 1616 in Cologne ) was a portrait and history painter of Flemish origin.

Live and act

Geldorp, who grew up in Leuven in the province of Brabant , joined the painters' guild in Antwerp with Franz Francken the Elder in 1570/71 . He then worked in the workshop of Frans Pourbus the Elder , an important portrait painter of his time. Francken and Pourbus belonged to the school of Frans Floris , which founded the Dutch Renaissance .

Gortzius gained in importance and got a job with the Duke of Terranuova , Carlo d'Aragona, whom he regularly accompanied on his business trips, including 1579 to Cologne for peace negotiations with the Netherlands. Accompanying a painter was a tradition at that time and, like reporters today, they recorded the impressions, people and sights on their drawings. Gortzius remained his loyal companion until d'Aragona's death around 1618.

As early as 1610, Gortzius Geldorp took over from Bartholomäus Bruyn the Younger in the Cologne City Council. Some of his works were engraved in copper by Crispiaen / Crispin de Pas (1564–1637), others by Peter Isselburg . Around 1601 de Pas Geldorp reproduced the portrait of Elector Lothar von Trier.

Gortzius' son Georg Geldorp became a well-known portrait painter and worked in England in the mid-17th century .

style

Geldorp had a strong, shiny colorism . Brown dominated his color palette. His late works are characterized by soft transitions and a bluish tone in the cuffs and collar.

Geldorp historical paintings in the Dutch style have the character of portraits. From 1595 he began to sign his paintings. His signature consists of an intertwining of his initials GG. An f stands for fecit . Works by Geldorp Gortzius can be found in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn (portraits of Eberhard III Jabach and his wife), the Cologne City Museum , the Old Pinakothek in Munich and the Imperial Gallery in Vienna .

Around 1920 of his 70 portraits, mostly on wood, about 30 still existed in Cologne. His oeuvre includes nine family portraits, the last being from 1610. Some of his works were confused with those of Hans von Aachen .
