The painter's son Gortzius Geldorp was trained in his father's workshop and from 1610 to 1623 he was listed as a master in the Liggeren, the painters' guild of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke .

Geldorp went to England in 1623, where he got through an acquaintance with the Duke of Newcastle, William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle , contacts to the local aristocratic circles, who then became his new clients. During the time of the Stuart Restoration , according to Horace Walpole , he oversaw the royal paintings, a post that entailed a role as political negotiator for Charles II .

In 1637 Peter Paul Rubens was in correspondence with him and Geldorp ordered a crucifixion portrait from him for the Cologne banker Eberhard Jabach . From 1649 Geldorp made several paintings for Oliver Cromwell and was still active as a restorer for Charles II in 1662 . One of Geldorp's students was Isaac Sailmaker , whom he commissioned in 1653 and 1657 to make several naval pictures.

Georg Geldorp was married several times, including a daughter of the painter Willem de Vos . His first large house on Drury Lane was frequented by the high society, and Anthonis van Dyck and Peter Lely also lived in this house from time to time.

Style and reception

After Joachim von Sandrart , Georg Geldorp was not a good draftsman. His works consisted of copies in the form of traces of other works, primarily van Dyck's. Arnold Houbraken disapproved of this practice and preferred to write about other painters. After moving to England he painted in an Anglo-Flemish style. His full-length portraits of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury and his wife are still hanging in Hatfield House and in the National Portrait Gallery of the Earl of Totnes in London.
