Frans Pourbus the Elder
Frans Pourbus (the elder) (* 1545 in Bruges , † September 19, 1581 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch history and portrait painter .
Live and act
His parents were Pieter Jansz and Anna Blondeel. Pourbus was a student of his father Pieter Pourbus and, from 1562, of the painter Frans Floris . In 1569 he married Floris' niece and was accepted into the Guild of Luke in Antwerp. In 1566 he went on a trip to Italy that ended in Ghent . He stayed with his classmate Lucas de Heere (1534–1584). After his return he married Anna Mahieu in 1578, who married Hans Jordaens (* around 1555, † 1630) after his death .
In 1570 he completed an altarpiece by Floris with Crispin van den Broeck . Around 1579 he made some paintings in Tournai . In 1933 they were in the cathedral in Tournai, among other places .
style
Compared to the more muted colors of his teacher Floris, his color palette is more colorful. He preferred to paint portraits of strong, clear coloring (many in the galleries in Brussels, Berlin, Vienna and Dresden, self-portraits in the Uffizi in Florence ), less often historical pictures ( Christ among the scribes in St. Bavon in Ghent ). His portrait of Viglius Zuichemus in the Louvre testifies to his high material illusion. As a portrait painter he is synonymous with Adriaen Thomas Key (* around 1544; † 1590).
Around 1575 Gortzius Geldorp belonged to his workshop. His son Frans Pourbus the Younger was also a painter.
reception
His father, Pieter Pourbus, Cornelis Floris, Gillis van Coninxloo and Pawels Driessen inventoried his estate in Antwerp in 1581.
